Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
